Sonoran Desert Retreat, Cave Creek, AZ
Detroit Home Award Winner
Our goal for undertaking this 6,000-square-foot territorial style home was two-fold; 1. To bring current a 25-year-old interior and exterior living space that functioned poorly for the new owners, and 2. To capture the serene, spiritual nature of the surrounding Sonoran Desert in the palette of the design plan. The newly renovated home lies in the shadows of Black Mountain at the foothills of the Tonto National Forest. The house, by nature, lacks generous natural light. The same exaggerated roofline that prevents the desert sun from penetrating the interior renders many places dark and dependent on incandescent light. The challenge was to brighten those spaces with color, or in the case of the master bedroom, use the moodiness to our advantage and create an elegant cocoon. The palette was inspired by the warm shades of the desert and its vegetation. The modern low-profile furnishings were selected for their refined design qualities as well as for allowing uninterrupted, panoramic views of the desert.
